Steph McDougal
Steph McDougal became interested in
historic ballrooms and dance halls in
2000 while working as a training and
education consultant in Ohio. After
several years of doing research on the
subject for fun, she had developed a
list of more than 1000 dance venues
across the United States from the
1930s-1950s and realized that this was
going to be her life's work. Steph and
her husband Alan moved to the
Houston area in 2005 so that she
could pursue a Master of Science in
Historic Preservation from the
University of Texas at Austin (and he
could take an engineering job at
NASA). Steph is currently working on
her thesis, an architectural history of
the dance halls in Texas' German,
Czech, and Polish communities, and
s
pends a lot of time in the field. When
she's not documenting historic
buildings, Steph and Alan enjoy
exploring Texas with their dogs, sailing,
listening to live music, and dancing.
